Nokia Ace Likely To Be Shown At CES

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) set this coming week is sure to have tons of nifty gadgets and gizmos and not to be left out is Nokia, which is reportedly using the event to unveil its first Windows phone for AT&T.

People familiar with the matter said AT&T, the second-largest US wireless center, will be featuring the Windows phone Nokia Ace. Nokia’s handset will be using long term evolution (LTE) technology. AT&T has been busy lately expanding its LTE network, and what better way to give it a spin than through Nokia Ace.

Final details on the deal remain confidential but sources said it is a go and will likely be priced at $249 with a two-year contract. Nokia’s partnership with AT&T is part of the company’s bid to gain lost ground in the smartphone arena, where the likes of Samsung and Apple have gained a huge following.

New Robot Design Inspired By Leaping Lizards (video)

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, have created a new style of robot that has been inspired by leaping lizards. The teams research indicated that modern-day leaping lizards use their tails to control the orientation of their bodies when leaping through the air, and sparked the new design. The video after the break illustrates how both the lizards and the robot were able to control their body orientation using their tails.

Leaping Lizard Robot

Using the lizard video footage, the team of researchers devised a mathematical model to determined how much tail swing would be necessary to compensate for a given amount of angular momentum of the body.

To demonstrate their theory they then created Tailbot, a small radio-controlled car equipped with a motor-controlled tail, and a gyroscopic sensor, to mimic the leaping lizards control. A paper on the UC Berkeley research was recently published in the journal Nature.

Vuzix To Show Off Smart Glasses At CES

Vuzix has announced that they will show off a new range of Smart Glasses at CES 2012 next week, which will feature integrated HD displays, using technology from Nokia.

Vuzix To Show Off Smart Glasses At CES

Now after years of internal developments and our recent licensing relationship with Nokia Corporation SMART Glasses Technology is finally here. This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of hi contrast and brightness for outdoor use. The output is then relayed into a 1.4 mm thick plastic waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user’s eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real world. And, all this technology neatly fits into the temples & lenses of a conventional pair of eyewear!

Vuzix has also said that their new range of Smart Glasses are expected to be available commercially by the summer of 2012.

Massive Rail Car Network To Rise In India

Amritsar is one of the most fascinating cities cities in the subcontinent. Not only is it the location for the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, but an engineering marvel is poised to rise above its streets and thoroughfare. Recently merged contractor UltraFairwood have announced its plans to raise a 3.3km long ‘elevated guideway’ to support a railcar network. Even on paper, the details are superlative.

Amritsar

Not only does the expansive network aim to transport 100,000 people regularly (especially Sikhs visiting their Golden temple), but contribute very little in terms of pollution and traffic. (Seen above is just a computer generated rendition.)

According to the website UltraGlobalPRT:

Amritsar represents the first urban application of PRT. At peak capacity the Amritsar system can carry up to 100,000 passengers a day on a 3.3km / 2.0 mile elevated guideway in over 200 pods between seven stations, making it the world’s largest PRT system to date.

Financed entirely by private funding on a build, own, operate transfer (BOOT) basis, passenger services will go live in 2014.  Although the cost of the scheme is subject to commercial confidentiality, it demonstrates that a large scale urban PRT system can be delivered on a financially viable, fare-based model and offer very real returns for financial backers.

So Bad Its Good: Bacon Soda Sells In Package Of Six

For some reason this reminded the writer of the Queen album ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ from way back when. Though the gist of this post is humorous, Bacon Soda is no spoof—it’s as real as cardiac arrest. Promoted as ‘a mad marriage between soda and bacon,’ Bacon Soda is currently available in an affordable six pack for $24.95 but can be discounted to $19.95.

Bacon Soda

Not sure if the taste of soda and bacon is appetizing, but for those seeking novelty Bacon Soda may sound like a good idea. Hopefully the liquid inside the bottle isn’t clogged with giant clumps of greasy salt-sweet bacon fat. Is this making your mouth drool? Sorry.

The weird part is it’s on sale at an online retailer specializing in bacon products.

Oh yeah, one last thing: despite what the promo pic might suggest, it’s not a smart idea to put a couple of bottles on a frying pan next to them eggs. Mmmmm…eggs.

So Soon! Lockheed-Martin Teases Sexy 2030 Fighter Concept

So to clarify: At the beginning of the year Lockheed-Martin distributed copies of its 2012 calendar to media friends. The accompanying eye-candy included the aircraft seen below. It’s not quite an F22, definitely not an F35…in fact, it’s a whole new beast. But hold on, because it isn’t taking to the skies until 2030. That’s just 18 years from now. A lot can happen in 18 years.

Lockheed Martin

Judging by the title for this post, it is rather early to let concepts such as this among the public. It’s especially distasteful in light of what a continuous fiasco the super-expensive F35 program has become.

Alas, the so-called ‘Miss February’ (corresponds to the month of the year), is being touted as a replacement for the F22. Such a shame really, because the F22 should be the frontline aerial badass defensidng US airspace. That was its destiny until then Defense Secretary Robert Gates nipped it at just a few hundred aircraft to be augmented by a huge fleet of F35.

Anyway, since it’s a concept there are no specs available though some of its projected capabilities include ‘all-around’ situational awareness and even ‘self-healing’ (!).

Microsoft Bids Goodbye To IE6

The day has finally come. And Microsoft figures the day marking the end of Internet Explorer 6 deserves a celebration. IE6, which started finding its way to PCs way back in 2001, saw its usage drop significantly and now, even Microsoft admits the time has come to put it to rest.

“Time to pop open the champagne because, based on the latest data from Net Applications, IE6 usage in the US has now officially dropped below 1%!” the Windows Team Blog said. “IE6 has been the punch line of browser jokes for a while, and we’ve been as eager as anyone to see it go away.”

Both in the US and abroad, IE6 is being used by only 7.7%, a significant drop that may have been the final blow to the once popular browser.

Samsung Galaxy Note For AT&T Confirmed By Accessory Makers

We heard recently that the Samsung Galaxy Note is headed to AT&T, although AT&T has yet to officially announce the handset, and now one accessory maker for the device has also confirmed that it will be available with AT&T shortly.

Accessory maker Anymode sent out its CES invites, and the invite mentions that Anymode are the OEM vendor for Galaxy note accessories, which pretty much confirms that AT&T will be having the Samsung Galaxy Note.

We suspect we will get some more of official announcement from AT&T at CES next week on when the Samsung Galaxy Note will be available on their network.

Updated 9.57 AM GMT

It looks like the PR firm has retracted the release, as we received a comment, saying that it was a mistake, and Slashgear has also received an email from the company concerned.

Although it is probably a little late for the PR firm to retract the information, now that we know that AT&T will be announcing the Samsung Galaxy Note next week.

iPhone 4S Owners Use Twice As Much Data Than iPhone 4 Thanks To Siri

According to a recent report, owners of Apple’s new iPhone 4S smartphone use almost twice as much data as iPhone 4 owners and almost three times as much data as iPhone 3G owners.

It would appear that it is Apple’s voice activated virtual assistant, Siri that is causing owners of the iPhone 4S to use more data than other iPhone devices, according to Michael Flanagan from Arieso.

Apple Siri

“I use the iPhone 4 myself and when I first heard of the iPhone 4S features I was not compelled to rush out and get one. However, the data usage numbers I am seeing make me wonder what I am missing,”

Since I started using the iPhone 4S I have noticed an increase in data usage over my iPhone 4, although it hasn’t been much as double what I previously used.

PS Vita Sales Continue Dropping In Third Week, Possible Price Drop Imminent?

Sales of Sony’s PS Vita portable gaming console have dropped again in its third week at Japanese retail. With statistics from Media Create data showing the PlayStation Vita sales slumping to 42,648 units in its third week from last week’s 72,479, which had already fallen drastically from the first week.

PS Vita

The new sales figures put Sony’s Playstation Vita behind Nintendo’s 3DS which moved 197,952 units. As well as Sony’s own PS3 and PSP machines. Should Sony be considering a price reduction to increase sales similar to that carried out by Nintendo to jump start their 3DS?

Some retailers already think a price cut is needed and some are taking matters into their own hands discounting the PS Vita, according to reports.

E3 2012 Could be Huge with Next Gen PlayStation Xbox, and Wii U Details

Over the last few years, many would agree that nothing of real awesomeness was seen at E3 in LA. The games were cool, but the hardware was lacking for the most part. That may all change in 2012. E3 2012 is shaping up to be one of the biggest shows it has had in years.

PS4

The rumors are pointing to Sony getting ready to offer up new details at the show on the next generation PlayStation. At the same time, Microsoft is tipped to be talking about the next Xbox as well. Neither firm is expected to do much more than tease though.

We already know about the Wii U, but Nintendo is expected to talk price and launch date at the show. I suspect the Wii U might come in at the $500 range. I have a feeling that premium next gen consoles will be expensive.

US Army Trademarked Gaming Guns And Gear Now On Sale

2011 has been the biggest year ever for shooters. No wonder a new line of gaming guns and gear have recently popped up for Xbox and PS3 enthusiasts. The difference this time around is the stuff is US Army trademarked, which is probably a not so subtle-way of endorsing the perpetual good guys in the Call of Duty franchise. (Except for General Shepard though, that guy rightly deserved to be wetworked by Soap and Price.)

Gaming Gun

Despite the shameless plug for Call of Duty, this writer is strongly inclined toward Battlefield 3. It might not have won in sheer volume, but as a package, it freaking smokes. And yes, doing mid-air stunts is bad ass. Even when they go horribly wrong.

Included in the series are two variants of the Commando/Elite Force action rifle, a headset, a backpack, and a sniper rifle for those headshots.

The detail on the guns (the Heckler & Koch 416) is quite impressive, though whether these contribute to a overall improvement of your game is questionable.

Apple Wants To Ban Steve Jobs Action Figure?

The other day we saw some photos of a new Steve Jobs action figure, the latest one is the most realistic to date and is being produced by a company called Inicons and will retail for $99.

As we mentioned in our previous article, when these action figures have been produced in the past, Apple has attempted to ban them from going on sale and this looks like the case with the latest one.

Skyrim Finally Gets Monopoly Treatment

Because adapting video games into Monopoly hasn’t lost any steam, last year’s biggest fantasy outing has received much love from deviantArt user ~oddeh. The end result is a 20×20 Monopoly game that is ready for printing. An overwhelming reception has compelled dear ~oddeh to produce accompanying cards and coins. According to the desciption, this Skyrimed Monopoly board is printer ready though not a part of official Skyrim merch nor is it Monopoly licensed. Still, it’s a fine piece of work. Bravo! (*gives round of applause.)

Skyrim Monopoly

~oddeh admits to being inspired by other recent reinventions of the age old family game about cutthroat business. Both Fallout and Mass Effect Monopoly games were featured here at Geeky Gadgets before. And BioShock. All three have been floating around deviantArt for a while now, garnering much acclaim from the game faithful.

So…anyone ever going to put in the work for a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare spin on Monopoly?

South Korean School Showcases Its Robots (Video)

Fine, so South Korea may be second fiddle to Japan’s overall devotion to mecha-kind. That doesn’t mean South Korean conglomerates, universities, and technology startups don’t make great strides on their own. For the past several years now, a tech university has hosted a robotics festival to showcase the work of its students. What really sets it apart is the astounding variety all the kids put on display.

iRobot

Seen above is (of course) a screen shot from the movie iRobot. The actual ‘bots that figured in the event last year were way less biomorphic but had notable abilities despite. As for the ultimate utility of the nearly sentient machine slaves ‘bots,  keep in mind a gray population is a serious issue for developed countries and robots are apparently a viable solution to support the crunch on national healthcare.  Other than assisting the elderly and disabled, other less-humanoid ‘bots appeared. For best results, try the media down south.

The robots all came from Mokwon University and play a role in recruiting prospective talent. Mokwon University’s annual four day Robot Festival is held each November.

iPad Survives 100,000 Foot Drop Test From The Edge Of Space In G-Form Case (video)

Here on Geeky Gadgets we have featured a number of iPad drop tests that have been carried out using the G-Force iPad case. The drop tests started from the safe height of a balcony and then stepped up to an impressive 1300 foot. Now the iPad and G-Force case have been dropped back to earth from 100,000 foot, from near the edge of space. Watch the video after the jump to see the drop for yourself.

G-Force

If you are wondering the beginning of space is 100 km above sea level, which is 328,084 feet, so they still have some way to go before it can be truly classed as space. But I sure in a few weeks the distance will be even more absurd. G-Form’s VP innovations, Thom Cafaro explains:

“As far as we know, this is the first iPad ever in space,”-“And definitely it’s the first iPad that’s ever free-fallen from space and survived to play more movies. We are usually known for making the most protective gear on the planet,”-” so we decided why not raise the bar to off the planet too.”

You can find more information about the G-Force iPad case over on the manufactures website.
