Mailbox For Ipad In The Works

When I first got wind of Mailbox, the new mail app for the iPhone, in February, my curiosity got the better of me (as it usually does). Truth be told, I have had no issues with the default mail app on the iPhone and the iPad. The hype surrounding Mailbox did send me to the App Store rather quickly, though. I was made to go through a course in patience, however, as initially, while the app was available to download, users were given access on a first-come first-served basis. And apparently, there were several hundreds of thousands of users ahead of me.

Several weeks – and countless checks – later, my turn finally came, and behold, I was treated to a very clean mail app on the iPhone. With the tag line “Put email in its place”, the ideals of Mailbox are very clear: organize emails so that your Inbox is always clean, fast, and easy to access.

One really handy thing about Mailbox is that you can “put off” emails for whenever you want to deal with them. You can say it’s procrastination by design (and with style), but I guess it works for many people. As of today, Mailbox continues to be one of the most applauded email apps for iOS.

But there’s not native app for the iPad. Yet.

Don’t lose hope, though, as it has been confirmed that Mailbox for iPad is in the works.

No official announcement has been made on their blog, but that looks like a confirmation to me, doesn’t it? Also, that Twitter conversations does give Android users the hope that they will have their own app. As to when that will happen, no one knows.

If you have not tried Mailbox, I suggest giving it a try. It is free, and if you are okay with putting away emails that you cannot handle immediately, the design and features will really help you achieve Inbox zero on a regular basis.

Lego City Undercover The Chase Begins Review

Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins is a follow up to the initial Lego City Undercover, developed by TT Fusion and released for Wii U a few weeks ago. The game strives to offer gamers a similar playing experience as its predecessor and boasts being the first open world adventure for the portable 3DS platform. Unfortunately, it is exactly the restrictions of the 3DS that keep The Chase Begins from fulfilling its true potential.

In terms of storyline, the game is actually a prequel to the Wii U sandbox action adventure, and centers on charming rookie cop Chase McCain as he explores a huge city, battles gangs, tracks down collectibles and engages in the occasional high speed car race. Players will be able to control Chase while through several boss fights and while utilizing the powers offered by different outfits.

The game manages to retain a great part of the humor and relaxing gameplay that made its Wii U brother so successful. Too bad none of the awesome voice acting of the Wii U version could be worked into the 3DS, as that lost some of the original game’s unique sense of humor.

In fact, this is where the developers erred with this game. The 3DS version seems to be just a stripped-down version of the Wii U game, that required plenty of concessions to get where it is. Granted it is still a charming game that is particularly appealing for kids, but adults will enjoy it more if they have also played the first Undercover City and still have its mood and wit in mind.

The Chase Begins also inherits some technical flaws from the original Undercover, in that it sometimes struggles with framerate issues and lengthy loading times, which risks taking some of the fun out of exploring an open world.

In conclusion, even if it fails to deliver the same style and quality of gameplay as the Wii U version, The Chase Begins is still a fun and engaging game that can keep you occupied for ten hours and can be quite a success with young gamers. If you have a 3DS and are looking for a good game to play, you should definitely give it a try.

Happy Birthday, Superman!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s…! Well, we all know how that goes, right? But have you ever wondered why? What is it that actually makes Superman so recognizable? Is it the red cape and blue suit? Is it his invincibility and uber-cool super powers? As the Man of Steel just turned 75, let’s take a look back at the history of what is arguably the world’s most popular superhero.

Superman made his debut in 1938 on the cover of Action Comics #1. His creators, Joe Schuster and Jerry Segel had a lot of trouble taking this character off the ground, as they initially imagined him like a bald villain intent on world domination. Eventually, they settled for the tall, dark and strong alien superhero who stops at nothing when it comes to saving the world.

And that is exactly what Superman was like in his early days: a man of action who had no problem fighting villains and the authorities as well in order to accommodate his idea of justice being served. He also did not have a problem killing the baddies or threatening to wipe them out if they stood in his way.

But that didn’t last long. Despite being from an alien planet, Krypton, the character soon became an American icon and over the years, underwent the same changes the American society went through. A symbol of patriotism during the war, then a family man reflecting the values of the expanding U.S. middle class in the 1950s, a post-modern superhero who was explored in alternate incarnations or variations in the 1960s-1970s, and so on.

Superman’s popularity dwindled several times over the years, but somehow, he always managed to get back to the foreground. He is perhaps one of the most reinvented superheroes out there and if you expected that to kill a character, it actually seems to have made the Man of Steel stronger.

And when the much anticipated “Man of Steel” feature film is released this summer, Superman will probably be reinvented again, as a raw, gritty and more conflicted superhero. This is a major break from the original light hearted, yet not-to-be-messed-with American icon, but it’s only fitting given the times we live in.

In the end, despite so many re-stylings and reinventions, despite so many changes of costume and abilities, what makes Superman so popular and recognizable is his core attitude: someone who believes in the good humankind and will never give up fighting to protect what he loves, someone who always has hope. Just like every single one of us.

Get This App: Buy the Items on Your Favorite Shows

How would you like to own that outfit your favorite TV character wore in the latest episode? Or maybe a watch, smartphone or other gadget they were using on the show? Apparently the people over at Get This Corp. had the same idea when they launched a special iTunes app that allows users to order some of the things they see on their favorite shows.

The Get This app, designed by Get This Corp founder and CEO Lisa Farris, merges entertainment and commerce in a unique, innovative way. It is currently free to download. The app shows TV viewers purchasable items on their iPad. The items are synced with the show you are watching.

Get This Corp. works with the TV shows’ production staffs in order to be informed of what items will be featured on every episode. For the time being, the app works with a limited number of shows, most notably with “The Carrie Diaries” and hit political drama “Scandal,” starring Kerry Washington.

So when you are watching your favorite shows on TV and a featured item appears, it pops up on your iPad screen. The idea is that if Washington’s character Olivia Pope wears a beautiful dress or those iconic opera gloves, the items appear on the screen to allow you to buy them.

The app allows you to search for items by show and episode, but also by cast and character. On one of the most recent episodes of “Scandal,” for instance, there were about 80 items available for purchase through the app. It has three shopping options: Original items on the show, Stylist Picks similar to the original items on the show, and Affordable, which allows you to get the same look for less money.

The app is expected to include three brand new shows and several specials as of this July, Farris announced recently. Get This Corp. is also planning to move forward and expand their collaboration with producers and networks in order to add more shows and events.

Raspberry Pi Miniature Computer Overview

Miniature computer Raspberry Pi, initially developed to help children learn how to program, is going into mass production, becoming an increasingly popular gadget for small businesses as it is easily customizable and has extended programming applications.

The Raspberry Pi, manufactured by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, currently costs $35 or $25 without Ethernet. It is a fully functional miniature computer, with 700 MHz ARM CPU and 256 MB of RAM, and its hard drive is an SD card. It is provided with Ethernet, two USB ports and 1080p HDMI.

The specifications make it a pretty strong computer, given its size, but it still has significant limitations in terms of processing power. The Raspberry Pi is nowhere close to the power of a desktop computer or a modern day laptop, and is somewhat similar in strength device such as a tablet or smartphone. But it was never intended to be as powerful as a PC.

The primary use of the Raspberry Pi is not to run demanding applications or games, but to enable programming and process control. The miniature computer can be used to determine whether other computer components are working properly. It can also be used to solve connectivity problems, control various processes or to serve as development platform for software and network engineers.

The manufacturers came up with the idea of developing such a small computer after noticing how little programming and web design was being done in the mid 2000s, as compared to the 1990s boom. This was also due to the fact computers were too expensive to allow experimental programming.

Beside programmers and computer engineers, small businesses can profit the most by purchasing this miniature computer. It is accessible and powerful enough to be used as a dashboard for business intelligence. Raspberry Pi can have multiple applications for SMBs, for instance allowing businesses that cannot afford hiring an IT manager to easily test the security of their information and computer networks.

Raspberry Pi owners can also download a wide range of applications, media programs, development tools and so on, from the online Pi Store. It is very easy to find programs and test them on the Pi and then remove them if you’re not satisfied. This miniature device is a useful thing to have if you want to try your hand at programming or do other things you wouldn’t dare to do with your main desktop computer.

Dead Island Riptide Proves Entertaining Despite Bugs

Dead Island Riptide, the follow up to the popular 2011 role playing zombie slasher Dead Island, follows pretty close in the footsteps of its predecessor, in both the good and the bad. Developed by Techland and published by Deep Silver, Riptide will appeal to fans of visceral zombie-killing games who also enjoy a good first person RPG, but unfortunately, it is marred by many bugs and technical flaws.

Riptide was recently released for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and is believed to work on Wii U as well. The game generally received lower scores than the first installment of the franchise. The negative reviews complain not only about the bugs, but also about the fact the new game does not actually bring anything new in terms of gameplay or content.

The story picks off where Dead Island left off: the four surviving characters destroy an aircraft carrier that risks spreading the infection and end up seeking shelter on another island. The population of that island, however, has also been infected and the survivors, joined by new character John Morgan, are forced to go on another zombie brain-bashing rampage in order to stay alive.

Gamers who played the original Dead Island should know that they can import their characters, if they are using the same profile. The characters are transferred with only their skills and level. In multiplayer mode you can still pair characters who are at different levels, as each will battle enemies fit for their skills.

The combat methods remain largely unchanged from Dead Island, which can be exhilarating for some players and very frustrating for others. Just like in the original game, Riptide focuses on melee weapons and combat, from blunt objects to various bladed weapons, which can be upgraded with the help of items you can scavenge from the island. Blunt weapons can make for some slow and inaccurate zombie kills, but those who enjoy going go one-on-one against a brain-eating monster and come out on top will surely be satisfied.

Flaws aside, Dead Island Riptide still promises hours of entertaining gameplay, zombie gore, rewarding melee combat and co-op fun. It’s definitely worth a shot!

Dell in Dire Straits after Blackstone Exit

Blackstone Group LP has finally withdrawn their bid for PC maker Dell. The group had been weighing up the price it should offer for buying Dell but eventually decided to remove itself from the race. Until then, it was a three-way battle, with the other major contender being founder Michael Dell who has made a bid in conjunction with Silver Lake. Now that the Blackstone Group is out of the picture, it seems as though there is no stopping Michael Dell from retaining ownership and control of his company.

However, it was being anticipated that Blackstone would be able to outbid the coalition and buy Dell. This seemed to be the case with the investors as well. As soon as the news broke out regarding Blackstone withdrawing its bid, the share prices of Dell plummeted. In fact, the fall was so steep that the price reached its lowest level in the past two months. The nearly 4% drop caused the price per share to fall to $13.40. The last time the price had been this low was in early February.

The main reason Blackstone has cited for withdrawing its bid is that the market for PCs is contracting. There is nothing untrue about this at all. Rather, the financial projections for the future aren’t encouraging. Despite being the world’s no.3 PC maker, Dell is expected to face tough time, considering the fact that it isn’t as popular as some of the other companies in the market, like Microsoft and Apple. So, it does appear as though Blackstone is justified in its decision.

The share price after Blackstone’s withdrawal is quite significant. For one, it is much lower than the price offered by Blackstone in its original bid. The group had offered to pay $14.25 per share. On the other hand, Michael Dell and Silver Lake are offering $13.60 per share. Given that the stock price fell steeply, it does seem as though they would be able to win the bid. Before the fall, Blackstone’s offer was ideal, with the shares trading at close to $14.

The third party in the race, Carl Icahn, is offering a higher share price. The issue is that Icahn doesn’t want more than 58% of the company. Dell would have to contemplate the $15 per share offered by Icahn when deciding whether they want to sell part of the company or not. It is bound to be a tough decision for the review committee as they aren’t inclined towards giving away control of the company to Michael Dell. Yet, Icahn doesn’t want the whole company.

The issue with Michael Dell is that he wants to remove the company from the public markets and turn it into an entity providing enterprise services only. By buying out the company, he would be free to do as he please as there would be no investor pressure. Blackstone may have done him a huge favor by withdrawing its bid just a month after submission. Still, the company wishes to close the deal before June which puts Michael Dell and Silver Lake as the frontrunners for winning the bid.

Samsung Unveils Galaxy Tab 3

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 was unveiled Monday morning and the tablet appears to feature mild upgrades to the company’s Tab lineup. The devices specs point to a budget friendly device aimed at the smaller-sized tablet sector.

The Galaxy Tab 3 features an upgraded dual-core 1.2GHz processor (up from 1GHz on the Galaxy Tab 2) and it comes equipped with a 16GB internal storage drive. As with other Samsung devices the Tab 3 also features an extra microSD expansion slot. The card expansion slot allows for an additional 64GB of added memory.

The Tab 3 runs on the Google Android 4.1 backend and comes equipped with a three-megapixel camera alongside a front-facing 1.3-megapixel option.

With its entry-level specs the Galaxy Tab 3 also features a seven-inch TFT display that outputs via 1024×600 pixels of resolution.

In terms of connectivity the Tab 3 features standard Wi-Fi connectivity, Wi-Fi Channel Bonding on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 3.0, and USB 2.0.

Users should receive plenty of use time out of the device with its 4,000mAh battery. The device is also easy to hold with a size of just 111.1 x 188 x 9.9mm.

Samsung will begin selling the Galaxy Tab 3 internationally in May. The company will release the Wi-Fi version next month followed by a 3G setup in June.

Samsung has not yet released pricing for the new entry-level tablet.

With HP launching its own 7-inch Google Android tablet for just $170 we expect that the Galaxy Tab 3 will be offered at a respectable price point?

As you can tell from the pics above the Galaxy Tab 3 follows the standard Galaxy Tab design with a rounded bezel, plastic casing and both physical and touch-based buttons on the frontside.

With Apple’s marketshare of the tablet market taking slow but steady hits the budget friendly Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 could be a big win for Samsung.

Are you in the market for a low-end Android-based tablet.

Click & Grow Smart Garden: Fresh Herbs Year-Round

There is nothing quite like fresh herbs and spices to help you when striving to turn from a mediocre cook into a talented chef. Unfortunately, not many of us have access to freshly cut herbs or have the necessary space to plant their own little garden. This is where the Click & Grow Smart Herb Garden comes in!

The Click & Grow Smart Herb Garden lets you grow your own spices indoors, without almost any intervention necessary. It uses a water reservoir, plant seed cartridges and a light source and does all the monitoring necessary itself. You just have to plug it in, add water and the device will take care of all the rest.

The appliance was developed by a Palo Alto, U.S. registered company which has a Research & Development lab in Estonia. A first prototype was released successfully a while back and the manufacturer has now put an upgraded version up on Kickstarter.

The second generation device is provided with a LED light, which allows it to be used in absolutely any room of your house. The manufacturer says the LED lights used for this project were specifically designed so as not to harm the eye or make the plants look unnatural. World leading LED experts worked on this technology, which gives plants the light they need to grow healthy and only requires 6 watts of energy.

While the initial device only allowed users to grow one plant, this new model can grow up to three different plants at once. The Click & Grow smart garden comes with included cartridges for basil, lemon balm and thyme. Refill cartridges for mini tomatoes, peppermint, chili pepper, spinach, lettuce and others are also available.

The crowdfunding campaign has already exceeded its $75,000 goal and the manufacturer is looking to start production as soon as possible. The Smart Herb Garden will be sold for a retail price of $79, which, we believe, is a small price to pay to get wonderful fresh herbs year-round!

Facebanx Facial Recognition Combats Online Fraud

Rampant online fraud and identity theft could be considerably reduced with the help of new, innovative software. The concept is developed by tech company Facebanx and combines video chat with facial recognition technology.

The software has the same name as its developer and was designed as a weapon against online ID fraud. The idea is that any organizations institutions that need to verify someone’s identity will be thus provided with facial recognition techniques which will allow them to compare freshly captured images with those already on a person’s file.

The technology adds an extra layer of security to online authentication processes typically demanded by banks, insurance firms and any other organizations accepting online payments or operations. With this new feature, all these organizations can verify the identity and credibility of the customers who sign up for their services.

How it works

The Facebanx practically asks customers to take a photo of their face with a webcam or smartphone when they sign up for insurance, banking or other similar services online. The customer’s face is then uploaded into the Facebanx database. This procedure makes sure that the same face cannot be used with another account or that different face will be used to access the initial account.

The photo can only be taken from a live video recording, which prevents the customer from submitting a fake image for a fake identity. The image is then run against the entire database and if it found that it matches another identity, the applicant will be contacted by a service agent for further inquiries. The agent can launch a fraud investigation if necessary.

Facebanx Facial Recognition Combats Online Fraud

Facebanx said its software was specifically designed to provide a unique solution to combat fraud. The company is currently in negotiations to add the software to the Customer Relationship Management of several processing companies, merchants and banks.
