Swiss Engineers Create Worlds First Gold Coated Thread

4:14 PM

If you enjoy a little bling in your clothes you will be pleased to hear a team of Swiss engineers have now been able to create the world’s first 24 carat gold coated silk. Enabling fashion designers to be even more extravagant with their creations in their next fashion show.

The thread is coated with nanometre thin layer of pure gold which can now be created thanks to a new process developed by EMPA. As you can see by the photo below its already been applied to make bowties, handkerchiefs and ties even more snappy.

Originally the project aimed to create silver coated fibres and the textile specialists at Empa in St Gallen had been researching for 10 years to create a process of finely dividing titanium, aluminium, steel, copper and silver. Enabling them to then use these powdered metals in atomic form to apply onto polyester fibers.

Further processing of the fiber is then carried out by the Weisbrod-Zuerrer AG spinning mill in Hausen am Albis and the embroidery firm Jakob Schlaepfer in St. Gallen.
