The Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 is a 15.6-inch model from their 2012 Z-series entertainment notebook line.
The IdeaPad Z580 is powered by the latest 3rd Generation Intel Core processors, but the notebook is currently also offered with the 2nd-gen Core chips. There are various configurations available with the 3rd Gen “Ivy Bridge” i7-3612QM quad-core or the 2nd Gen “Sandy Bridge” i5-2450M and i3-2370M dual-core CPU models. All of the available models ship with the Intel HD integrated graphics only, but Lenovo has announced that the notebook will also sport the Nvidia GeForce GT 640M 2GB dedicated video card. RAM and HDD capacity go up to 8GB and 1TB respectively, while the optical drive options are DVD burner or Blu-ray combo.
Design-wise, this at-home laptop solution offers a quite different exterior depending on model. Some configurations have brushed-aluminum lids in gray color, while the other Z580 models come with white or red plastic LCD back. In both cases the base is made of plastics and the keyboard used here is the AccuType, with a numeric keypad on the right of the main keyboard area. That’s a chiclet-style keyboard with ergonomically shaped keys. A turn off for some is maybe absence of keyboard backlight. In Lenovo’s notebook portfolio, that feature is reserved for select models in the more premium IdeaPad Y line.
No matter what material is used on their lids, the IdeaPad Z580 notebooks have 1.4-inch thick profiles and weigh about 5.8 pounds. It’s probably a little too heavy to take around with you on daily basis, but on the other side it’s a standard weight for a laptop of this form factor.
Besides the new core components and overhauled design, the Z580 brings connectivity improvement over the Z570, thanks to the USB 3.0 technology instead of 2.0.
According to Lenovo, the battery life for models with integrated graphics is up to six hours.
