DARPA creates gigapixel camera

1:06 PM

DARPA, who usually busies themselves creating killer robots and such, has revealed its latest project, a gigapixel camera. It should be much safer than the kind of monstrosities they usually create. This camera is capable of taking photos that are at a much higher resolution than the human eye can see.

So far DARPA has tested a 1.4 and .96 gigapixel camera and they plan to continue researching the technology and hope to reach between 10-50 gigapixels. Keep in kind that a gigapixel is 1,000 megapixels, or 1 billion pixels. The camera uses between 100 and 150 micro cameras to create a wide panoramic image with a very high resolution.

It is part of a larger project called AWARE (Advanced Wide Field of- Vision Architectures for Image Reconstruction and Exploitation) designed to help improve the military’s vision in battle. Think of what they can do with rifle scopes or on UAVs as. Right now, the camera is two-and-half feet square and 20 inches deep. As they learn more, it will shrink and get even more useful.
