The Dell XPS15-1591 is one of the lower-end models from the 2012 XPS 15 L521X 15.6-inch premium notebook series.
The configuration in question boasts the 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3210M dual-core processor which doesn’t deliver such great performance like the same notebook available with the quad i7-3620QM. In Passmark benchmark test, the i5-3210M is more than twice less powerful than the i7 with 3,654 versus 7,927 points, but in real world use the i5 is more than sufficient for day-to-day tasks and media playback and creation.
For most of the consumers, the video card name NVIDIA N13P-GV, listed in the XPS15-1591 specs sheets at some retailers, may be confusing. The N13P-GV is actually the codename of the Nvidia GeForce GT 630M, which includes 1GB of GDDR5 memory and belongs to the previous-gen “Fermi” GPU family. Other than the 630M, the latest XPS 15 is also offered with the faster GT 640M 2GB GDDR5 based on this year’s “Kepler” family, so in this field the 1591 config again uses a lower-end component. Both video cards have a 128-bit memory interface and are capable of playing many of the latest game titles at low-to-mid detail settings at lower resolutions. However, the 640M is based on the newer energy-efficient technology which delivers a better performance-per-watt ratio.
No matter which GPU is used, all of the XPS 15 configurations ship with a full HD screen, which is protected by a seamless piece of Gorilla Glass and has an above average brightness of 350- or 300-nits, depending on source of the specifications.
Storage space and RAM are in entry class when compared to other configurations and provide a capacity of 500GB and 6GB, respectively. But, the HDD spins at 7,200rpm, up from the usual 5,400rpm rotational speed and is supplemented by a 32GB mSATA solid state drive for fast Windows boot-ups and resumes.
One of the selling points of the Dell XPS15-1591 for multimedia enthusiasts is the included Blu-ray Combo optical drive, instead of the commonly used DVD burner. Another non-standard feature on the notebook is Intel WiDi technology for wireless video streams to external monitors and TVs.
The Dell XPS15-1591 is priced at $1,200.
