India market: Smartphones account for 25% of sales value in 1Q12, says CyberMediaDaniel Shen, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 6 July 2012]Sales of handsets in India grew 9.1% on year to top over 50 million units in the first quarter of 2012, with smartphones accounting for 5.3% of total sales in terms of shipment volume and 25% in terms of sales value, according to CyberMedia Research.Samsung Electronics ranked as the top vendor in India's smartphone segment with a 40.4% share, followed by Nokia with 25.5% and Research in Motion (RIM) with 12.3%, said the market research firm.Nokia and Samsung have been prevailing in the entry-level to high-end smartphone sectors in India, since prices of their smartphones vary enough to cover all segments of the market. Samsung launched seven smartphone models in India in the first quarter with prices ranging from INR7,500-27,000 (US$136-490), CyberMedia indicated.With respect to the feature phone market in India, Nokia ranked top with 21.8% share, followed by Samsung with 10.7% and Micromax with 6.4%. Feature phones are priced at INR5,000 on average in India.
